Mental Health Awareness Week at CWU

This past week Central Washington University’s PRSSA team put on a different event for each day of the week to raise awareness about mental health. #eburgspeaks was held from February 28 to March 3, I attended on Thursday March 2nd which was the theme of “feel good”.

In the SURC pit there was a table with information and behind that was a huge poster that students could use the colorful markers to answer the question. The question being “How do you take care of yourself?” it was open for anyone passing by to anonymously write up on the board about how they personally take care of themselves.

Personally, as a college student I live a very busy life trying to balance taking 17 credits, working part time, working out and oh yeah of course.. having a social life. Life can get stressful and overwhelming but something I took away from Thursdays campaign was to always be sure to take some time for yourself.

I usually find that working out either by myself or with a friend is how I like to take a time out from my crazy busy life, it is also a way I am able to relieve stress. Eating healthy is another way I take care of myself, obviously there are times I fall off that eating healthy train but for the most part I try to eat a balanced diet because I can tell the different in how I feel during the days when I eat healthy vs when I slip up.

I have heard nothing but great things about this event and I was really please with how supportive the students here at CWU were towards these events.

Nordstrom Drops Ivanka Trump Clothing Brand

Nordstrom Will Not be Purchasing Ivanka Trump Brand for the Upcoming Season

Soon Americans will have a harder time finding Ivanka Trump clothing line in stores. Nordstrom pulled the plug on Ivanka Trump clothing line due to her sales steadily declining.

I think you could guess what comes next… yep you guessed right, a tweet from Donald Trump accusing Nordstrom of treating his daughter “terribly” when in fact Nordstrom claims to have notified Ivanka Trump personally about the news in Janurary.  She was not in the dark at all about this situation, Nordstrom has had several meetings in the past to openly discuss sales with the Ivanka Trump team.

The move by Nordstrom comes amid a social media campaign called “Grab Your Wallet,” urging a boycott of stores that stock Ivanka Trump or Donald Trump products.

Last November, Nordstrom defended its decision to sell Ms. Trump’s products. “We hope that offering a vendor’s products isn’t misunderstood as us taking a political position,” the company wrote on Twitter on Nov. 2. “We’re not.” Despite all the fuss about politics, Nordstrom strictly made their decision to remove Ivan Trumps brand based on performance.

There are a number of ways Nordstrom could have gone about dealing with this situation, but because Ivanka Trumps is closely associated with Donald Trumps name I believe it could have been handled in a more timely fashion. Negative attention could have been avoided if Nordstrom would have kept their customers in the loop with multiple press releases following this subject, obviously there is a positive side to this situation as well; Nordstrom stock price increased by 3 precent. Trump supporters on the other hand had a different view on Ivanka Trumps brand being pulled from Nordstrom, claiming to stop shopping at Nordstrom until Ivanka Trumps line was back in stores. More communication would have avoided uproar in the media.

Lackland Air Force Base Sex Scandal

Sex Scandal Involved 31 Trainees Allegedly Victimized by Instructors

Investigation of the scandal began June of 2011, when a female trainee came forward and accused her male instructor of assaulting her. Once this one particular female trainee decided to come out, more cases started to reach the surface. The Air Force immediately started to address the situation by shutting down all recruit training for one day to give a written survey to all the trainees at Lackland, where they then came to the conclusion that Texas has become the main focal point in this growing

Weeks later the Air Force brought charges against the instructors who had been involved. Gen. Edward Rice, the commander of Air Force Training, had said that the investigation of 12 different instructors at Lackland did not mean that there was a systematic problem across the the entire Air Force training program. Some instructors that were accused of sexual assault were Master Sgt. Jamey Crawford was accused of giving alcohol to a female trainee and then having sex with her. Tech. Sgt. Christopher Smith was accused of striking up an intimate relationship with a trainee, making sexual hints at a trainee and carrying on a personal social relationship with a second trainee.

Justice for the Victims Involved in this Scandal

The Air Force relieved the officer that was in charge of the training squadron where most of the officers that had been accused of sexual crimes came from. He no longer was able to be in charge of any squadron but he still remains in the Air Force.

For most, one would say that it is unfair that anyone that played a part or that was involved in this scandal should resign from the Air Force. I agree, however, the Air Force did come up with some ideas on how to solve some of these issues. First things first, hiring more female instructors is a start, also exploring the possibility that only female instructors will handle females.

Sexual abuse is a touchy subject to most and believe it or not it happens throughout all military branches. “The Pentagon estimates 19,000 sexual assaults occur each year. But only 14% of these crimes are actually reported. And less than 8% go to a court-martial.” (Chris Lawrence, CNN). Although precautions have been said to take place immediately there is still going to be concern that comes from the public. Especially from those that are sending there loved ones off to Air Force basic training.

In my opinion they needed to fire everyone that was involved or at least temporarily terminate until the trails were over. Women don’t feel safe and comfortable talking with a confidential sexual assault response coordinator. Air Force bases across the country could use some help on making women feel more comfortable approaching a coordinator and in making them feel safe in the situation.

Chipotle’s Worst Nightmare

Chipotle takes major hit to their brand reputation

After the restaurant was linked to a massive E. coli breakout in 2015,  many Chipotles in different states across the US had to closed down for business. However, that wasn’t the beginning to their failing business, sales were decreasing rapidly due to people having second thoughts on indulging on their food. Chipotle was also facing the possibility of being criminally investigated.

“food with integrity” was said to be Chipotles brand promise at the time of this E. coli break out. In the eyes of the public Chipotle takes an even great hit to the reputation because they have always claimed to use fresh locally-sourced food. While using food that is not in fact fresh and locally grown their brand promise is completely disregarded.

How can one trust Chipotle after this massive e coli breakout?

Coming from a girl who would eat Chipotle for every meal if she could, I’d say this has overall changed the way I view this company. When I think of Chipotle I think of a healthier place to grab lunch or dinner on the go rather than settling for McDonalds or Taco Bell.

I have always heard nothing but great things on an any advertisement seen about the company, especially having to do with their food products. Even by the looks of their restaurants, it is considered to be higher end on the fast-food scale. The food always looks so fresh and appitizing so to think a food borne illness had been associated with Chipotles name is disgusting.

Even after reading about how Chipotle was going to undergo extreme measures to regain the loyalty of their customers, still left me with a bad taste in my mouth.

“The company has pledged to tighten food safety procedures to prevent further such incidents.” -Chipotle founder and co-CEO Steve Ells

The largest campaign that was established during the time of regaining customer loyalty was a meeting which was held to discuss and allow employees to give there opinion on how to reassure the public that it is safe to come back. This meeting also covered the steps that employees can take to ensure this type or any other type of illness for that matter would not occur again. Chipotle had sent out a tweet letting the public know that this meeting would air live on the app called Periscope at 12pm EST.

In my opinion I believe that Chipotle should have gone to more extreme measures to ensure the public that as a company they were doing everything they could and in a timely manner to fix this problem. Also considering many got ill due to the breakout and some were hospitalized, Chipotle should have reached out to each individual the was affected and payed for their hospital bills.

I feel as if this E. coli breakout was swept under the rug. The problem was not covered enough on all social media outlets. I remember back to when this happened I barely heard any news covering this issue. The only big news that had everyones jaw dropping was the Chipotle was closed and I remember immediately googling “is chipotle closed for good?” but this issue was not made known more like trying to be covered up.
